Subject:Meiji Satsuma Marks
Posted By: PD Props Sun, Jul 10, 2016 IP: 24.212.205.144

I picked up a couple pieces that were listed as Meiji Satsuma, but now I am not quite sure.

The first piece feels like a miniature incense burner (sans top).

I have done some google searches trying to find the mark, but with no luck.

The other piece is a miniature vase, again with look like Meiji marks. The marks are a little faint, but here they are.

I have found similar stuff, but nothing quite the same.

I put would them at a late Meiji 1900-1910 range maybe a little earlier. I have no problem with them being Meiji.

Hi,

I took a look at the marks of your Satsuma pieces.

The mark on the tripod reads on the right: Satsuma = 薩摩 and on the left Bun???zan Sei = 文 ??? 山 製 (made by Bun???zan). I could not find out what the second character is.

The other mark was a little bit more difficult.
On the left it reads the makers name: Hotoda 保土田. On the right it reads Dai Nippon 大日本 (Great Japan), because I recognozed the second character 日. And Dai Nippon is often seen on Hotoda marks. The characters in the middle are unreadable for me, but probably it is something like Satsuma 薩广 with the shortened character for "ma". I've seen a number of Hotoda marks that look like that.

Hope it helps.

Regards,
Martin.
