Subject:17th Century Japanese Painting Translation Help
Posted By: Brett Fri, Aug 05, 2016 IP: 69.119.204.101

I have tried on many outlets, including here in the past to try and get to the bottom of this painting with no luck. Can any of the Japanese experts here translate any of the characters on this piece. I was told it was 17th century although it might be 18th. Any help is greatly appreciated.

First character - 千 - one thousand

Second character (could be) - 禧 - happiness

Thanks, Mike. I appreciate you taking the time to add your thoughts. At least I have a little to go on. I have posted this in so many places and tried asking many people, but because of the faded quality its hard to get to the bottom of this. Sadly the woman whose estate this came from passed away so I will never have the chance to ask the person most likely to know. She had a great collection of authentic and original 17th/18th/19th century Ukiyo-e prints. Many of which I sold after purchasing. This one cost me the most because it was the only original painting. I knew it wasn't going to be easy to figure this one out, and 2 years later I am still trying. In any event, thanks for what you had to offer.
