Subject:Unusual Jade Plate
Posted By: Peter V Mon, Aug 15, 2016 IP: 68.172.216.186

Wondering if anyone has seen a carved plate like this, it appears to be Jade and came with this custom fit box. It appears to have jade inside of jade, some of the outer pieces have chipped off the inner design. It's about 11 inches across, any information is appreciated!

Are you certain the inlay is jade? If it's reflective and "chips" off, I'd bet that it's actually mother of pearl or abalone shell. Jad is relatively hard stuff with a glass-like crystalline structure.

If you can get a few higher resolution shots from various angles but of the same spots, I'd be able to give you a little more information on what it may be, but from the picture provided that certainly looks like abalone or MoP to me. How big is it and about what does it weigh, as well?

A cool looking piece either way!

I think it's carved white jade with the 6 sided inset having MOP that has a design carved in it, it has many of the small MOP pieces that have come out in the bottom of the case. It's really, really nice, weighs 2 1/2 lb.s and is 12 inches across about 1/4" thick, I've included a closer picture of the inset, thanks for your help.

I think this plate is a carved alabaster plate with "pietra dura" inlay work.

If you Google "Inlaid alabaster plates" you will see many examples.

The link below has quite similar pierced "window" carvings.

Nice plate...good conversation piece.

Cheers
