Subject:Watercolor copy of Zhao MengfuChen Hongshou/ painting?
Posted By: ChillCat Wed, Aug 31, 2016 IP: 99.65.113.197

Hello there. This watercolor on rice paper copy is titled Qu Yuan Sang while Walking, and seems to resemble a Chen Hongshou woodcut, but whoever did it used the seals/chop marks of Zhao Mengfu; I would love if someone could help me translate what the seals say! I also don't know what the calligraphy says either. I would appreciate anyone being able to help me learn more about this watercolor copy, and also possible value :-).

Some of your information is right, some not:

This is a contemporary painting based on a Chen Hongshou woodblock print that is pictured in the body of this article: http://m.chinadaily.com.cn/en/2016-06/07/content_25642374.htm

Also see: https://books.google.com/books?id=M2HxBwAAQBAJ&pg=PT146&lpg=PT146&dq=chen+hongshou+woodcut&source=bl&ots=LNqZj0I9w1&sig=s-RB74vrB1N9dSp6qkt7umNx6n0&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiV3Z6Ar-7OAhXLlh4KHUT_AhYQ6AEITjAO#v=onepage&q=chen%20hongshou%20woodcut&f=false

The inscription on your picture is meant to be in Chen Hongshou's hand and is comprised of a signature and the print's usual title (屈子行吟圖). There are no Zhao Mengfu references in the seals or inscription, and wouldn't be since Chen postdates Zhao by centuries. Rather almost all of the seals seem to be imitations of imperial seals used by the Qianlong and Xuantong emperors. Perhaps meant as a decorative homage rather than to deceive. No commercial value.
