Subject:wooden statue of thailand
Posted By: Philippe Mon, Sep 05, 2016 IP: 86.194.94.228

Hello,
I've got this wooden statue, probably coming from ancient lanna country (ethnic tatoos and characters)
It's made probably in teak wood
Does somebody know what subject it is, and if it's ancient or new ?
Thank you in advance
Philippe

Stylistically, this carving looks like it could have been done by an artisan of the Shan people of Burma, who are ethnic Tai, thus cross-border relatives of the Thai.

Various ethnic groups in Burma are deeply into tattoos for their perceived astrological and mystical significance, so this image could have been made to advertise a tattoo artist's location ("tattoo parlor" might be a misleading term, considering the "shade-tree" nature of so much industry in Burma when I was there in the 1980's). Its condition appears to be fairly good for something that probably was exposed to the elements when in use, so I'd guess it might date from the early to mid-20th century.

The link below leads to an old blog with photo and comments (above the photo) concerning a related tattoo.

Best regards,

Bill H.

This is not Thai. The hair style and tattoos suggest that this is Burmese. The use of such commercial paint on the statue also means that it is not ancient.
