I would appreciate any help identifying this mark and possible age of these bowls. Thank you for your help!

Chinese Bowls

These bowls with their faux Ming look and mark of "Jingdezhen Ancient Kiln" (景德古窑 - Jingde Gu Yao) were found on the shelves of the American "Pier 1" import stores during the late 20th century and have been disappointing U.S. estate sale buyers who think they have a "find" ever since. Gotheborg.com shows a B&W covered bowl with landscape decoration and the same mark as circa 1990.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you so much for your help. I had no clue that mark was supposed to be a Ming dynasty mark. I only paid 47 cents each at a thrift store :-). I'd love to buy some more to have a set, but I've looked everywhere and can't find any from American Pier 1. I did find these https://new.liveauctioneers.com/item/12092756. I'd love to find the reproduction ones from an American Pier 1 import store.

Thanks to anyone for your help!

Hope you're not under the impression that the bowls that went unsold in that Live Auctioneers sale are authentic Ming pieces, as claimed. The auction house apparently misread the mark as one of the Chongzhen Period, or at least that's a best-case scenario. You won't find this mark either in Gerald Davison's 2013 2nd edition of "The New & revised Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics" or the 2006 Shanghai-published Zhong-guo Li-dai Tao-ci Kuan-zhi Da-dian (which I would informally translate as "Compendium of Markings on Chinese Ceramics through the Ages"). It only has three marks for Chongzhen, all of them standard reign marks.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hello there :-). ? The fake Ming dynasty bowls sold for 175$ in that auction sadly. I hadn't the slightest inkling what era the bowls were "supposed" to be; I assumed they were from the 1950's since they have a lot of rust marks. I would like to buy more but not at the exorbitant prices at auctions(since everyone is being fooled.). And thank you for your information.

I would appreciate anyone who can provide for me a link to the direct seller from the 1990's to buy these at a more reasonable price since American pier 1 import stores don't seem to have them anymore. I would love to have a set, like I said :-).

My apologies. Live Auctioneers has recently changed their format, and along with that, I was confused further by a promo for a pair of yet to be auctioned bowls labeled as Chongzhen located in the margin next to the fake one that sold for $175.
