Subject:Kansan sculpture, improved pictures.
Posted By: Mikael Tue, Sep 20, 2016 IP: 83.137.8.9

It´s been some time since my last post about my sculpture. I really would appreciate if someone could have a look on this text to maybe dechiffer it for me (I´ve taken new pictures).

Earlier most generous reading:

Right to the left:

文禄之申(?)五月 Bunroku no Saru ?, gogatsu (Bunroku, Monkey ? (probably: year), 5th month)

尾張国 瀬戸 ? Owari (no) kuni; Seto ? (Owari Province, Seto, + not read)

堀田甚五郎 ? Hotta, Jingorô ?? (Hotta Jingorô + not read)

Signature: 青心寫 六代? Seishin sha rokudai?(composed or drawn by Seishin, sixth generation + not read)

Best regards

// Mikael

文禄之申(?)五月
should be
文禄 ニ 甲年 五月 (fifth month of the first year of the Bunroku reign, or 1592)

Is your sculpture and this calligraphy stylistically consistent with objects produced in 1592?

Yes, I believe so. It seems, however, that it is made In a very little known or perifer tradition. Everything about this sculpture serms to be cover with mystery...
Ca 32 cm high. Made in ceramics, depicting Kanzan and Jittoku.
Best regards.

I have not been able to find any sculpture similar in expression, and comparable stylistic appearance. Do anyone in this forum know anything about its origin (in a temple in Seto? Or otherwise), the sculptor (who, judging by lack of skill (fingers etc) maybe was a potter?) or the tradition It was made in. I come no further in my research...
Best regards.
