Subject:Japanese double 'gourd' shaped 'Kutani' 'Meiji' vase. How old ?
Posted By: Steffen Saabye Wed, Sep 21, 2016 IP: 188.177.78.63

The vase is decorated with a satirical scene from a rich man's home. The bottom with 'fuku' sign. It's probably from the 'Meiji' period. But is it possible to be more precise about its age ? Can you tell me more about it ?

Your vase is in the style of Aoki Mokubei (青木木米 - 1767-1833), a potter famous for the individual style in your vase. He and the style influenced Kutani pottery as well. His works are rather rare on the market nowadays, but those in his style flourish. Here's a mixed bag of three earlier queries in the forum about stuff that appears to be made in "tribute" to him, with and without his name on it, as well as one mark & period piece sold by Christie's in 2004.

You may be able to find more of the real thing on line with a little work.

Best regards,

I can't thank you enough ! Thanks to you I now know much more about the pieces in my small collection of Asian art. I'm always particularly interested in finding out how old they are and you have already helped me a great deal in that respect !

Yours,

Steffen S.
