Subject:What do you think this wooden base was for and what country?

This is another item I picked up at an estate sale. I always pick up wooden bases when I find them and this one called my name.
There was a small wedge of wood stuck in the center upright.
I've never seen a base like it and wondered if anyone has seen another.
Any thoughts on country of origin?
Any thoughts on what sat on top?

A very uneducated guess...
I think they are Chinese foo dog / dragons

Don't know measurements.
Could have held a chest?
