Subject:unknown ancient cup?
Posted By: raijinspecial Fri, Oct 07, 2016 IP: 2605:6000:e988:6e00:

I've been trying to identify the period and region that this piece comes from. If anyone has any knowledge about this I would be very curious, thanks!

It is metal, probably bronze because it is non-magnetic.

I am surprised nobody answered your question. This is a Chinese bronze libation cup known as a jue, the originals of which date back to the Shang dynasty.
I cannot offer an age to your one, except to say it is probably a 20th or 21st century copy.

Tony

Just to add that the oldest known jue was discovered in Henan province at the site of the Erlitou culture, which is generally associated with the Xia or early Shang period.

20th century copy is a possibility but it came from my grandfathers antique shop in the Bronx which closed in the 1920s. I don't know how long he had it though. Is there any way to tell that it is indeed a modern copy?

The handle appears to be too small to be a
practical way of holding this vessel for pouring.
If it was genuine it should be usable. The casting
appears to be slightly off, and the decorative
elements are too repetitive. I believe that it was
made as a tribute to the original concept.

is the decorative pattern a standard motif of a particular place/time?
