Subject:Nagasaki Ken ?? To Bill H. or Guy
Posted By: Martin Michels Thu, Nov 03, 2016 IP: 84.26.216.123

Bill, Guy,

I adress this item specially to you 2, because of your knowledge of Chinese and/or Japanese characters.

In my search to know more about Japanese markings on ceramics I found this mark under a Hirado jar in the British Museum (see picture).
They translated the characters as:
Dai Nihon Nagasaki Ken Mikawachi Satomi Takeshiro

However I'm not convinced about the character for KEN which normally is 県.
So do you know what character is used?
I could not find it.

So if anyone knows, your help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

Martin, an identical mark is illustrated as No. 79 in Appendix Six of "Hirado: Prince of Porcelains" by Louis Lawrence, with a character-by-character transliteration just as you have it here.

Cheers,

Bill H.

The character for ken on this vase is the traditional form, which was simplified to the official version you know after WW2
