Subject:Oriental table ?
Posted By: Steffen Saabye Sat, Nov 26, 2016 IP: 87.60.72.184

This small table looks oriental to me. Where does it come from and how old is it ? What kind of wood is it made of ? Do you know more about it ?

The table is Chinese. Looks early 20th century or a little later. Would have originally been part of a nest of tables of different sizes that would fit together thus the reason for the missing stretcher.

Many thanks for your answer. Now I can only regret the missing tables.

Well yes, it is from the Orient.
China - Guangzhuo to be precise, a city the colonials used to call 'Canton'
These days we still call this type of furniture 'Cantonese' (regardless of how little sense it makes) Tables such as these were made during the late 19thC for the English market. Originally a nest of tables, your table is one of a set of four, and a sort of combimation of the English and Chinese styles. The wood could be huali, but being that it is incomplete is not going to be an easy sell.
If you happen to find the rest,
