Subject:Japanese Artist, Ikkou
Posted By: JMOChicago Sun, Jan 15, 2017 IP: 73.8.16.99

Long story short. Bought an old house--from the family of an industrial/interior designer who worked for Holabird & Roots between 1900 - 1950's and taught at the Art Institute of Chicago.

He and his family liked to travel the world, including China & Japan.

House came stuffed to the brim with things, including a heavy bronze sculpture of an elephant. The mark on the bottom of the elephant is "Ikkou".

Looking for information about the artist and his work in bronze. Many thanks.

The mark on the piece is 一光 , which among other transliterations can be read as "Ikko". I found one Ikko-signed Japanese bronze censer from a Christie's auction that had a Showa period (1926-1989) date, but unfortunately the listing showed no characters on which the name could be confirmed. You might want to search using Google. It responded to my query with images of several bronzes which I was unable to access at the time. Perhaps you'll find the sites up and functioning if we haven't heard from a Japanese collector by the time you see this.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The signature should be read in the native Japanese manner (KUN-reading) as 'Kazumitsu' (一光).
Tokyo school Meiji bronze, ca 1890-1900, designed and cast for the export markets in Europe and the USA. Good quality.

Guy.

Oh my goodness, thank you. Would this be from Ikko/Kazumitsu? I did a little searching around and his signature is linked to the name "Ikeda Yasumitsu" (see link)...does this sound possible?

It wouldn't be the first time that something kind of crazy turned up in this same collection from the house (We've already found Prestini bowls, an Enrique Alferez maquette, Siegfried Weng block prints, etc.)

I just hadn't really had time to follow up on this sculpture because there was less to go on. I guess I should fetch it from the basement. Like, right away.

Thank you. Not quite sure what to do with this info.

Can anyone confirm the signature to be ikko kazumitsu? I acquired this wonderful japanese signed meji period sculpted Snow monkey it came from a 7 million dollar Beverly hills estate from a woman who owned it who turns out she was an authority/expert on asian art/antiques,...the monkey is 12 inches tall by 12 inches deep and about 10 inches wide and very heavy made out of japanese pottery and the detail is phenomenal , really lifelike and masterful ,any help is appreciated
