Subject:Okinawa Jade Dogs
Posted By: Rebecca Merrington Sun, Jan 15, 2017 IP: 122.59.57.81

I was wondering if anyone knew about this type of Jade dog. I bought it at a temple antique market in Tokyo, but know nothing about it.

Small about half the size of the cup in the photo.

This looks liked a soft stone, not like Jade. Scratch test recommended.
using a strong needle, make a 2-3 mm scratch. Then tell us if that tiny scratch is black or white.

You noticed that it was easy to scratch . . it is a soft stone, no relationship to Jade

Or possibly a ceramic material of some sort? Object looks better if rotated 180 degrees clockwise. Likely a Japanese netsuke. There should be a perforation for the cord and the carving should be small in size.

I do not think that it was made in Japan, but most likely in China.

Style of the buddhistic lions looks more chinese than japanese to me too. But there is a forum for netsuke where you can probably get qualified opinion. Address is: forums.netsuke.org

I think it is too large to be a netsuke. Thank you for your response. I assume Japanese as I bought it in Japan. No other reason. It certainly perplexing.

I would agree with Ernest, most probably made in China, soft stone commonly used to replace turquoise. Not old.
