Subject:Chinese Finely Carved Wooden Water Buffalo

This finely carved water buffalo appears to have some age by the amount of related wear at the base. I am hoping one of the experts on carvings might be able to give an estimate on when it was produced. I would also be interested to know the type of wood
Largest measurement: 16.5"; 42cm

I believe you have an image of the African wild cape buffalo and not the Asian domestic water buffalo. If you Query Google Images for a comparison of the two species, you'll note their horns have different growth patterns. Perhaps this is a souvenir of someone's safari in South Africa.

That looks like an African Cape Buffalo, not a water buffalo. Have you considered it might be African in origin?

Thank you for your comment. Although I cant vouch for this dealer, they seem reputable with galleries in 3 locations around the world. A strongly similar piece was sold through one of those galleries, as Ming/ Qing. If the link does not work, the name of the gallery is Barakat. Search there for "A wood carving of a water buffalo" to find it in their archives. Yes, many wood carvings from Africa are available online-Although for what I have found they appear to be recent and from art studios with a different character, or even w/a similar feature such as the use of the wooden stand as found in earlier Chinese works

On further review, I would like to withdraw this carving as being Chinese for a lack of supporting findings at this time that would establish a clear connection as such.
While making the connection of the carving to the likeness of some wild Asian water buffaloes and to a strongly similar carving sold through a gallery owned by Barakat in London- search words Wood carving of a Water Buffalo, this limited amount of supporting documentation has led me to this decision. Thank you
