Dating of "Chenghua" wucai bowl (deep dish) |
Posted By: Walter C.Sterling,Jr. Posted Date: Oct 19, 2006 (06:51 PM) |
Message Tony: This bowl measures 10-1/4" wide and 2-3/8" deep. It has an old, two curved (?) shaped bottom. The iron oxide bled into the porcelain, but the underglaze blue stayed OK. It has a basemark similar to early Kangxi "Chenghua" but its theme of so many insects/birds reminds me of late Ming (Wanli). I realize it is more a relic more than a porcelain treasure, but I do think it is very old and may have been a genuine grave object. I doubt anyone would have gone through the trouble to fake this particular item since it is not that beautiful. (I like birds and bees!) Best, Walter P.S. I've been on your Website before when you let me know my "Xianfeng" was a fake. |
