Subject:Old ivory carp, can you help with the signature
Posted By: Bill Mon, Nov 29, 2010 IP: 86.74.243.20

I have this sculpture of a carp and it has a signature on the base.

Can anyone identify the markings?

It is 11 centimetres tall. (4 3/8 inches)

The photos were taken under electric light hence the warm color.

much appreciated

Bill

Here is a photo of the signature on the base.

The mark says 'Qianlong' but the carving probably is contemporary. As Stan has noted, it appears to be bone, as indicated by the small pores that represent traces of the capillaries that permeate bone but are not present in ivory.
Best regards,
Bill H.

Bill,
It says Qianlong, but is written from left to right.

This appears to be bone - not ivory.

Cheers,
Stan
