Two Gu Fangs?

Hi, Frank:

While I cannot rule out the possibility that there may be two Gu Fang and both are "jade experts" in China, only one is real and the other is fake, just like you said. However, if you search for information regarding 古方 (Gu Fang) the jade expert in China, it seems you would only be able to find information on only one of them who had appeared in Chinese TV shows, Chinese web sites, Chinese magazines and newspapers, where he talked about jade carvings. I wonder if one of them may be a "hermit" because I cannot find information on two "Gu Fang" who are both jade expert in China.

I also do not understand what your definition of "old" and "young" is. In the States, to be considered as a senior citizen one would have to be at least 55 years old. The Gu Fang on whom I could find information on was born in 1962, that will make him about 47 years old, surely not old enough to be called "OLD", does it?

Therefore, do you mean this 47-year old Gu Fang who was known everywhere in China as a jade expert is the young fake jade expert mentioned by you in your message?

In the Paragon book gallery:

http://www.paragonbook.com/html/powersearch/searchresults.cfm

There are two titles of jade books that are written by Gu Fang and they are:

中國出土玉器全集(15 Volumes) 古方
Zhongguo Chutu Yuqi Quanji (15 Volumes) The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China (15 Volumes)
Gu Fang Item # 32251 ISBN 7030160096 Price: $1,350.00

中国古玉器图典 古方
Zhongguo guyuqi tudian The Pictorial Handbook of Ancient Chinese Jades
Gu, Fang Item # 33756 ISBN 9787501018758 Price: $85.00

Unless proved otherwise, I have to assume both were written by the same Gu Fang.

I did not have the pleasure in owning the first title.

However, I did have the second title and it was a very informational jade book (dictionary). Unfortunately, it does not post a picture of Gu Fang.

However, on every single link that shows the picture of the young (47 years old) Gu Fang, they all listed the second book as a book written by him.

(see picture 1 posted here)

Now a Chinese book site that was selling the 15 volumes of jade books edited by him (see first title above) also had another book written by him with his picture on its front cover and it looks like the young 47-year old Gu Fang to me.

(see picture 2)

Another web site also lists Gu Fang as born in 1962 and his picture looks very similar to others listed in the two aforementioned links:

(see picture 3)

Now if go to this link:

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XODEyODcxNDQ=.html

and left click on the RED arrow, you will be able to see him appeared on CCTV2, appraised a piece of jade carving. Again, the young Gu Fang appeared on the TV looks just like the picture of the young Gu Fang appears on other links, not the OLD Gu Fang mentioned by you.

You can also see his picture and bibliography in these other links:

http://www.mr699.cn/html/586.html

http://baike.baidu.com/view/115594.htm

They all seem to show the same young 47-year old Gu Fang with a chubby face.

Now where is the OLD Gu Fang, the real jade expert, you talked about in your message?

Of course, it is quite possible there may be indeed another Gu Fang, the real jade expert in China, just as you claimed.

But is he the person who wrote or edited those jade titles I had shown here earlier?

Why no information could be found on him?

From the few jade collectors whom I had talked to, they seemed to believe the Gu Fang whom they had met and who had authenticated and issued a COA for the jade carvings they own or bought is the same Gu Fang who appeared in all these other links.

May be they are all wrong and you are right?

Quite possible, but very unlikely, in my personal opinion. Of course, if you would be kind enough to post credible evidence here, I will stand corrected.

I just wonder how come a person who resided in Germany would know so much about real Gu Fang vs fake Gu Fang in China? Or are you just pulling our legs?

Cheers.

Bill
