Can't help with the mark but I have an identical Japanese vase with the same mark that I bought at an estate auction in 1985. It's 13 3/4 inches tall. An appraiser in San Francisco dated it about 1890. Appraisal back then was $600 but who knows today.

The mark appears to read 義疋 in kanji characters. However, 疋 appears to be a variant of 匹. When combined with either of the latter variants, the two characters appear to have a pronunciation of "Yoshiki", but this is the online "RomanjiDesu" machine translation, and I have no idea if it is relevant in this instance. I couldn't find anyone or anyplace connected with Japanese bronze when checking the name via Google.

Good luck,

Bill H.

Susan,
You made me curious. I have another vase with the same mark. It’s a little smaller, 10 3/4 inches tall. A previous owner valued it enough to carve a social security number into the base. I hadn’t paid attention to the marks before and didn’t realize they were the same; but would also appreciate knowing if anyone can identify.
