Subject:Lion Vase with K'ang Hsi Mark
Posted By: Stan Shursky Tue, Nov 22, 2005

This earthenware (?) lion vase is about 14 inches tall. The execution is a little crude. There are minor defects possibly attributable to slips of the tool used to incise the design (are those concentric arcs waves?). Some examples can be seen in the lower right quadrant of the 3rd picture.

In a break with from the usual, there is a K'ang Hsi (is the new term Kangxi?) mark on the base. The dealer (as usual) told us it was 80-90 years old.

Any information about this vase is appreciated.

Thanks,
Stan

This appers to be a modern piece 1990-2005 Chinese are making copies as we speak. The foot rim is not Kangxi or even 19th century revival-Regards Anna

Anna,

Here's a detailed picture of the lions. The quality of the worksmanship is not that good.

But we did buy this because we liked it. I was just curious and I'm trying to learn a little about the subject.

Thanks for taking the time to respond,
Stan

I suppose the vase has 50 - 100 years as the dealer said. We have seen a lot of modern pieces painted like yours, but the footring is different with the older ones. The Kangxi mark, of course, has been copied until the recent years, but the brushtroke of iron-red of lion dog combined with overglaze uneven blue and foot ring of piece are typical of Republic era piece.

A close up of the mark would help a great deal. If you notice a flat like even consistency this would point to a piece after 1990. A mark where you can see the strokes stop and start is good although doesnt mean it is old either. The foot concerns me as it is also typical of the newer pieces coming out of China...better closeups would help. Regards ~Anna

Here are more pix. The ring is about 3/8 inch wide (the bottom is recessed). The mark is fuzzy because it is a little fuzzy on the pot.

Thanks for the interest,
Stan
