Subject:Bali Oil Painting Dance Festival Garuda
Posted By: Marie LaCroix Sat, Feb 23, 2002

I would sincerely appreciate any information on this painting. I know this is the Hindu god
Garuda in the background and this a Balinese Dance representing a festival. Size of oil painting is approximately 25 1/2" by 17 1/2". I cannot discern the signature. I am interested in an appraisal value of the painting and also selling the painting. Any information would be quite welcome. Thank you for your time and consideration.

The painting would appear to be by I (Ibrahim) B. Gede Wisanto, possibly of the Wisanto family that has produced many painters in the Western style around the city of Ubud. Western oil painting came to Bali with such artists as Spies and Rudolph Bonnet in the late 1930's and developed into the Bali School by the 1950's.

The scene is a performance of Legong Keraton, the dance drama style of the Kraton or royal palaces. In this example both male (fore) and female roles (back) are portrayed by young women, normally before they have reached puberty. These are traditionally performed now in the temples in each village - the figure behind is probably part of the wall sculpture of the split ornamental gate and may be Garuda or Bhima from the Mahabharata epic.

Just a thought - Perhaps the I.B refers to Ida Bagus, a very common name in Bali....Ian

Yes, IB would be Ida Bagus ( which means that he is a Brahman). The painting is of the dance Oleg Tambulilingan, which is the dance of the bumblebee.
if an appraisal is still needed, send me a message. Thank you.
