Posted By: rat Mon, Sep 22, 2014 Asian paintings on silk or paper are often rejuvenated by a fresh mounting. They are soaked to loosen the starch-based backing that holds them to their existing mount, soaked to help impurities/dirt to lift out, and then remounted on a fresh backing. Getting an Asian painting remounted can be an expensive proposition however unless you are in Asia and can find shops to do it. In this case though I suspect the cardboard backing is not doing the silk any favors and that barring finding a specialist who can do the remounting for you, you may at least want to find a conservator to remove the cardboard and back the painting with something non-acidic and more stable. The characters on your work seem to be the same as the signature in romanized Vietnamese: "painted by Pham Chu" |
