Subject:paintings on silk - any information about artist/how to restore?
Posted By: Emerg55 Tue, Sep 16, 2014 IP: 178.167.254.209

Hi

(images attached this time)
I have two paintings/prints on fabric attached to board/cardboard.
I wonder if anyone has any idea of the artist or anything at all. I attach the characters (I don't know the language) and latin script signature.

I'm not sure where they're from. They have been in the family at least 50 years (they were bought in Paris many years ago) but would love any information.

Also, any tips for getting them cleaned? They look a little what I would describe as foxed if talking about a book.

Asian paintings on silk or paper are often rejuvenated by a fresh mounting. They are soaked to loosen the starch-based backing that holds them to their existing mount, soaked to help impurities/dirt to lift out, and then remounted on a fresh backing. Getting an Asian painting remounted can be an expensive proposition however unless you are in Asia and can find shops to do it. In this case though I suspect the cardboard backing is not doing the silk any favors and that barring finding a specialist who can do the remounting for you, you may at least want to find a conservator to remove the cardboard and back the painting with something non-acidic and more stable. The characters on your work seem to be the same as the signature in romanized Vietnamese: "painted by Pham Chu"
