Subject:Need help identifying old Asian painting / Scroll
Posted By: Yllo123 Wed, Feb 11, 2015 IP: 10.49.74.88

My family has in our possession a very old asian painting/scroll.
We no absolutely nothing about it, except that it was acquired through unofficial channels in Moscow in the '70s. We have always believed it to be Chinese, but some initial research from my side (google...) seems to show that it actually depicts a Samurai (notice the helmet). It does appear to be done on primitive paper. Sorry about the reflections in the image, but I didn't want to disturb it to much for the sake of this picture. Anyone able to help med identify what this is?

It is a Japanese Woodblock print. It looks like it is by Yoshikazu. Is the signature (lower right) the same as the one below?

Cheers,
Stan

This is a Japanese woodblock print by the ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Yoshitora (act. ca. 1836-82) and published ca 1840s, depicting the commander Minamoto no Yoshitsune (left) and his right-hand man, the warrior monk Musashibo Benkei (right) during an episode of the civil war in the 12th century.

Guy.

This is a Japanese woodblock print. The condition is one charitably referred to as a "late" impression, meaning it was printed after the blocks had started showing significant wear, and the printer had pared down the range of colors to 3 or 4.

I think the artist might be Yoshitora, but I can't make out the characters very well. I think it was printed cir. 1850 or so.
