Subject:Qianlong Pink Bowl
Posted By: Tom Tue, Mar 03, 2015 IP: 199.59.106.195

Hi all. This bowl is similar to one I saw on here before that was (I think) early 19th c? Was curious if anyone knew what this is called? Thanks.

I've provided the link herewith to the previous thread you've likely recalled. It concerned a probable Daoguang mark & period bowl with a similar though less well drawn floral design. I'd posted photos of my not quite matched Qianlong M&P bowl and saucer, the former in a related lotus scroll and the latter having a plum flower motif. I've reposted most of my photos here to make the marks more visible. Looking at your bowl, I can't see any reason to think it isn't also mark & period, though all of these were produced at commercial factories.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Further to my initial comments and photos, here is a related pattern, the "prunus swirl", as expressed on a probable Meiji-period (1868-1912) Japanese Banko eight-inch bowl that could easily be mistaken for Chinese if not marked. I believe there are elements of this swirl within the roundels on your bowl. Such Japanese works are worth keeping in mind because they sometimes include apocryphal Chinese reign marks, including a version of the Qianlong mark seen on your bowl.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Thank you Bill for the info. I thought it was Chinese because of the border and scrolling design, which I had seen on other similarly glazed pieces online which were called "ruby backed." Then I started seeing so many terms to describe the pink glaze I became confused! I didn't see the border or scrolling on Japanese pieces, which gave me a bit of re-assurance. I would much rather it was Chinese. Thank you once again!
