Subject:Help with my Chinese silk embroidery
Posted By: Troy Sun, Nov 18, 2012 IP: 67.185.181.105 My wife received this as a gift from her parents who are native chinese. We don't know anything about it. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks |

Posted By: Bill H Mon, Nov 19, 2012 The bold black characters read from the left as the title, "100 Birds Adoring the Phoenix" (Bai Niao Bai Feng), while I believe the red seal reads from the right as "Guangdong (province) Embroidery" (Guang Xiu). As best as I can tell from the photos, the dyes seem to be fairly modern. Cottage-industry handicrafts such as these were quite common in world marketplaces during the years immediately following World War II, while China (and Taiwan) were rebuilding and modernizing other higher-tech export industries. |

Posted By: Bill H Tue, Nov 20, 2012 FYI, here's a link to an earlier thread concerning an embroidery that appears to be identical except for lacking a red seal identifying it as a product of Guangdong. I would speculate that both embroideries probably were made at the same factory. During the 3rd quarter of the 20th century, when Western nations charged heavy customs duties on communist-country exports, China product stores in the then British territory of Hong Kong offered the convenience of selling lots of things like this labeled as made locally. |
