Subject:What is this "vase"?
Posted By: Griffin Mon, Nov 30, 2015 IP: 76.110.14.33

Hi,

I found this interesting "vase" and bought it but am unclear what it is and its value. Any insight on it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Griffin

The marks says 'Ju ren tang zhi', the 'Hall where Benevolence Resides'. This was an official mark used with porcelains made for the Presidential Palace, mostly from 1912-1916 under President Yuan Shikai (who in 1915 became the Constitutional Emperor Hongxian). These porcelains are noted for their high quality, whereas the painting on yours is more the average for decorative ware, even with the 'rotating?' center and carp painted more or less in the style of Deng Bishan.

At the link you'll find some pictures of Jurentang period porcelains I added to another query. Also here are some photos of a covered jar which may or may not actually be by Deng Bishan but certainly captures his style and markings.

Best regards,

Bill H.
