Subject:need help identifying a platter
Posted By: K Hoff Tue, Apr 19, 2016 IP: 205.144.215.148

Hello -

I have a platter with a mark which I think is Chinese. I bought the platter at auction in the San Francisco area about 25 years ago. Due to size restrictions, the pictures of the top of the platter are divided in half. If someone on this forum would be able to help identify where and (roughly) when this platter was made, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for any help you can provide!

This platter with apocryphal mark of "Made during the Qianlong Reign" looks stylistically to be a circa 1960's product, perhaps produced in Taiwan or painted on Chinese porcelain at a Hong Kong factory. Such dragon-Phoenix motifs were quite popular on dishes exported for use in Chinese restaurants, often during wedding celebrations. Probably not of great value except decorative, as the piece is fairly common and lacks age.

I've reattached the two halves for easier viewing.

Best regards,

Bill H.
