Posted By: Bill H Thu, Sep 01, 2016 The Chinese would call this a "wood fish" or "fish gong" (muyu - 木魚), called mokugyo (杢魚) in Japan, which is used as a percussion instrument for Buddhist monks as they engage in chanting at their temples. Yours probably was carved to represent a dragon carp, which is a legendary fish that manages to take a heroic leap up and over a waterfall, and in doing so turns into a dragon. |
