Subject:Pair of large blue alms bowls
Posted By: Stephen Wed, Jun 25, 2014 IP: 188.29.164.145

These two alms bowls I have though I don't think they are a pair measure 91/2&10 inches width and are covered in a thick blu porridge like glaze both have three stump like feet emerging near base, one covers the stumps with a uniform glaze, the other has a deeper blue thicker lustrous orange peel texture glaze covering the stumps with the grey white body showing through the glaze.
The first described bowl has the inside centre area pitted with a crystal like rough area and an unglazed foot with a centre dab of light blue glaze surrounded by six chinese character marks very hard to make out showing a little better when wet.
The second bowl has a slightly more refined shape with better applied interior glaze and a dry centre to centre of interior with three small applied dots of blue glaze corresponding to the stumps on the other side the thick porridge like glaze has deep fields of intense blue running through the glaze uniformly stopping above the unglazed base the centre of the base has a circular patch of celadon coloured glaze with a single character or number inscribed.
I would appreciate any opinions on them as when I find examples of similar on the net they vary greatly in certain details, my descriptions may be slightly confusing but I try to upload photos with not much success so if I do get any responses I will try and insert more images Thanks

If by any chance your "alms bowl" looks something like the item in the following pictures, then it actually is a Chinese censer with small tripod feet. Probably dates to the late 19th century. An auction result in included at the link.

Best regards,

Bill H.
